STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Overview:
Manhattanville's athletic philosophy places major emphasis on strength training and conditioning, and all Valiant athletes are put through a rigorous training regiment in and out of season. Manhattanville's main strength and conditioning facility, Healthworks, is located inside Kennedy Gym and is a sprawling, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training area. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches, physioballs and cardiovascular machines. In late 2007, Manhattanville will open a new on-campus facility for the general student population, making Healthworks home exclusively to student-athletes.

Training Overview:
Off-season - Goal: to improve lean body mass (LBM), strength, power, & general conditioning, while decreasing fat mass (FM). Large emphasis on strength training, workouts occur 3-5 times per week.
Pre-season - Goal: to convert gains made in the off-season into a more sport-specific form, while preserving LBM & reducing FM. Transition from strength training emphasis to specific conditioning emphasis, workouts occur 3-6 times per week.
In-season - Goal: to minimize strength & power loss, while preserving LBM & decreasing FM. Major emphasis on strength and power training, workouts occur 1-2 times per week.
Post-season - Goal: to allow the body to physically & mentally recover from the demands of competition. No structure training…athletes encourage to remain recreationally active.
