Women Place 10th, Men Take 11th at MAC Cross Country Championships

Junior Sarah Gustavsson posted the second-fastest 6K time in program history on Saturday.

DOYLESTOWN, Pa.
– The Manhattanville men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on Saturday morning on the campus of Delaware Valley College, as the Valiant women's team took 10th place out of 14 teams behind seven season-best times and the men's team placed 11th among 15 entries.

 

The seven-runner women's team finished with 271 points at the event, 11 points behind Wilkes University for ninth place and 10 points ahead of 11th-place Eastern University. Elizabethtown College took first place in the women's race with a team score of 38.

 

On the men's side, the five-person Manhattanville team ended up with 340 points, 29 points ahead of Alvernia University and 35 behind host Delaware Valley. Elizabethtown completed the sweep in the men's race by taking the top six spots to finish with 18 points.

 

The two best finishes of the day came from the women's team, as junior Sarah Gustavsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and sophomore Kelly Davidson (Yorba Linda, Calif.) finished one behind the other in 35th and 36th place, respectively, out of 128 runners. Gustavsson posted the second-best 6K time in program history by crossing the line in a career-best 24:49.29, while Davidson followed up with the third-fastest 6K result at Manhattanville, coming in a second later at 24:50.61.

 

Freshman Alexis Moore (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and senior Patricia Neubauer (Potsdam, Germany) also had good results for the Valiant women. Moore shaved more than two minutes off her previous-best 6K time and earned 72nd place overall with a time of 27:19.84, while Neubauer ran the second-fastest 6K of her career, earning 79th place by finishing in 27:46.20.

 

To continue the season-best trend, sophomore Nicole Muschio (Pawling, N.Y.) and juniors Pilar Mahady (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) and Arame Mbodj (New Rochelle, N.Y.) also set new season-low times as well on Saturday. Muschio took 103rd place with a time of 29:33.80, Mahady nabbed 109th position by finishing in 29:56.49, and Mbodj finished in 31:58.59 to place 115th overall.

 

Junior Mike Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) was the top finisher on the Manhattanville men's side, taking 71st place out of 133 runners and posting the second-fastest 8K time of the season with a time of 29:19.56.

 

Freshmen Daniel Caggiano (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Ben Smith (Proctor, Vt.) finished right behind one another on the day, as both runners set season-best times by taking 82nd and 83rd place, respectively. Caggiano took nearly six seconds off his previous best time with a 29:52.74 finish, while Smith's time of 29:54.83 was 34 seconds better than his last finish at Albany.

 

In addition, junior Josh Marrero (Elmsford, N.Y.) finished in 113th place with a time of 32:38.72, while classmate Morrison Boateng (Bronx, N.Y.) took 125th place and set a new season-best by crossing the finish line in 34:32.97.

 

The Valiants will continue its string of postseason meets next weekend at the ECAC Division III Championships, held at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I. on Saturday.
