MANCHESTER, Conn. – The Manhattanville men's cross country team earned a sixth-place finish at the Trinity (Conn.) College Cross Country Invitational, held at Wickham Park on a sunny Saturday morning. The Valiant women's team sent three runners to the race and did not score.
The Valiant men finished sixth out of seven teams at the 5K event, which featured an array of strong Division I, II and III programs, with a team score of 191. Division II Stonehill College took first place with a team score of 28. The women's race was also won by Stonehill with 23 points.
For the second straight meet, Manhattanville's top overall finish came from the women's side, as junior Sarah Gustavsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) finished in 27th place out of 67 runners with a time of 17:50 for the 4K run. Freshman Alexis Moore (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and sophomore Nicole Muschio (Pawling, N.Y.) also participated for the Valiants, with Moore earning 49th place with a time of 20:17 and Muschio taking 57th place with a 21:50 finish.
Junior Mike Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) once again was the first Valiant man to cross the finish line, as he finished in 53rd place in the 82-runner field. His time of 18:44 is the second-best 5K time of his career, behind his time of 18:02 at Trinity set last season.
Freshmen Daniel Caggiano (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Ben Smith (Proctor, Vt.) were the second and third Valiants to cross the line for the men's team in their first collegiate 5K races, as Caggiano finished in 19:08 to place 61st and Smith followed soon after in 65th place overall with a time of 19:14.
Junior Josh Marrero (Elmsford, N.Y.) followed in 71st place overall with a time of 20:54, while sophomore Chad Spaeth (Carmel, N.Y.) rounded out the Valiant runners to score at the meet with a time of 21:16 that placed him 73rd overall.
Junior Morrison Boateng (Bronx, N.Y.), sophomore Garry Ramirez and freshman Sean McIver also participated in the event for Manhattanville. Boateng, running his first cross country race since 2007, finished in a time of 22:56, while Ramirez crossed the line in 25:39 followed by McIver in 28:12.
The Valiant cross country teams will remain home next weekend, as Manhattanville hosts its first cross country meet in 26 years on Saturday, the Valiant Invitational, on Saturday. The women's meet begins at 10 a.m., with the men's meet following at 10:30 a.m.
