DOYLESTOWN, Pa.
– The Manhattanville men's and women's cross country teams got their 2010 seasons off to promising starts on Saturday afternoon at the Delaware Valley College Invitational, as the women's team placed 12th out of 18 teams with 342 points and the men's squad finished 16th out of 22 entries with a team score of 447.

In a meet heavily populated with Middle Atlantic Conference institutions, the Manhattanville women finished eighth out of 11 MAC squads while the men were ninth among 13 MAC teams. Elizabethtown College won the women's race with a team score of 48 points, while Messiah College took the men's event with a combined team score of 47.

On the men's side, junior Mike Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) picked up right where he left off in 2009, pacing the Manhattanville men with a time of 29:57.63 that just squeezed him inside the top 50 in 49th place out of 208 runners on the 8K course.

Freshman Daniel Caggiano (Staten Island, N.Y.) also had a nice debut for the Valiants, as he earned 63rd place by crossing the line with a time of 30:32.56 in his first collegiate race. Classmate Ben Smith (Proctor, Vt.) also posted a solid time in his collegiate debut, taking 120th place with a time of 32:29.28.

In addition, junior Josh Marrero (Elmsford, N.Y.) posted a time of 34:12.82 to take 151st place and sophomore Gerry Ramirez rounded out the men's results with a 48:27.40 finish (205th place).

Junior transfer Sarah Gustavsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) was the top finisher on either side for the Valiants, placing 30th out of 195 runners with a time of 25:52.57 on the 6K course. The time is the sixth-fastest 6K time in program history and the fastest time ever by a Manhattanville runner in their Valiant debut.

Newcomers continued to carry the Valiant women, as freshmen Ashley Luiso (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and Alexis Moore (Voorheesville, N.Y.) were the next two MVille runners to cross the finish line. Luiso took 94th place with a time of 28:56.57 in her collegiate debut, while Moore finished the course in 29:27.33 to earn 112th place overall.

To round out the Valiant scorers, sophomore Nicole Muschio (Pawling, N.Y.) took 133rd place with a time of 30:53.73 and junior Pilar Mahady (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) finished in 146th place after crossing the line in 32:00.08.

The Valiants will return to action next Saturday, when the team travels to Manchester, Conn., for the Trinity (Conn.) College Invitational beginning at 10:30 a.m.
