Morrison's Four Goals Propel Women's Hockey Past St. Michael's, 9-1

Sophomore Mary Rose Morrison had a career-high four goals in Friday's win.

BURLINGTON, VT.
 Sophomore Mary Rose Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Connecticut Stars (MFYHL)) scored a career-high four goals, all of which came in the second period, as the Manhattanville women's hockey team walked over the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's College, 9-1, on Friday afternoon at Cairns Arena.

The Valiants used a six-goal second period performance to drive their offense outburst over the NCAA Division II squad, which included three goals on the power-play and one shorthanded goal. Joining Morrison with four points on the contest was senior captain Shannon Coffey (Malden, Mass./North American Hockey Academy), who had three assists and a goal to eclipse 100 points for her career. Sophomore Katie Little (Victoria, British Columbia/Team British Columbia) finished the contest with three points on a goal and two assists, while classmates Lauren Nutkevitch (Montreal, Quebec/Dawson College) and Lynsey Schill (Waterloo, Ontario/Kitchener Rangers (PWHL)) each had a pair of points. 

Seven more Valiants were credited with points in the game as senior Jess Scioli (North Reading, Mass./North Reading), sophomores Sonia Occhionero (Montreal, Quebec/Kent School (Conn.)), Erin Sidjak (Delta, British Columbia/Pacific Steelers (JWHL)), Charlotte Hotaling (Southfield, Mich./Victory Honda), Jessica Kehoe (Kemptville, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats (PWHL)) and Ella Hubley (Santa Monica, Calif./LA Selects), along with freshman Haleigh Hutchinson (Allen Park, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) recorded a point in the victory.

The visiting team scored the only tally of the first period as Coffey came from behind the net and sent a wrist shot past Purple Knights' goalie Erin Stevens with 6:12 remaining. Kehoe and Scioli were credited with assists. The Valiants outworked the home team to the tune of a 12-5 edge in shots.

Manhattanville used the second period as a building block to their victory as Morrison tallied four times and the team scored three times on special teams. Morrison's first goal of the contest came at the 3:48 mark of the period with an assist from Hotaling to take a 2-0 lead. Three minutes later, Occhionero tallied her sixth goal of the season on the man-advantage with Coffey and Hutchinson setting up the center, giving the Valiants a 3-0 lead.

Saint Michael's broke the three-goal deficit with a shorthanded goal from Madelena Santore from Kiera Nelligan at 12:49. However, the team in black regained the three-goal lead as Little and Schill found Hubley for her fifth goal of the season at 13:33.

The next three goals came from one common stick, as Morrison scored a completed the hat trick and added another goal in the span of 2:22 to end the middle period with a 7-1 lead.  Morrison's second and third tallies came off passes from Coffey to also complete her four-point performance. The final goal was assisted by Little and Nutkevitch at 17:18. With the four goals, Morrison leads the team with 16 goals on the season.

The Valiants finished the period with a 19-6 edge in shots and forced the Purple Knights to call in relief, as Stevens finished the night with 20 saves before making way for Alysia Goldman, who made four saves in the middle frame.  

Manhattanville answered with a pair in the final period as Little scored on an unassisted shorthanded goal at the 10 minute mark and Nutkevitch found the net from the point with assists from Schill and Sidjak with just over a minute remaining.

The Valiants finished the game with 48 shots, compared to the 16 of the Purple Knights. Freshman Mary Evans (Ferndale, Mich./Honeybaked (TOEHL)) made 15 saves for her seventh win of the season.

Manhattanville (16-6-2, 13-3-1 ECAC East) will conclude the regular-season tomorrow afternoon as they take on ECAC East Conference regular-season champion Norwich University at 1 p.m. at Kreitzberg Arena.  The game can be seen live on the NSN Network, courtesy of Norwich Athletics at game time.
