MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Three school records fell and a pair of first-place finishes were achieved by the Manhattanville men's and women's outdoor track & field teams on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants took part in the Elmer Swanson Invitational, hosted by Wesleyan University at the Andersen Track.
The Manhattanville men boasted a pair of first-place finishes at the event, as freshman
Joel Rosenberg (Sigtuna, Sweden/) finished first in the shot put and senior
Dave Garrison (Huntington Station, N.Y./Knox School) took top honors in the high jump. Rosenberg, tossing the shot put for the first time ever in competition, shattered the school record by posting a top heave of 11.56 meters to earn the top spot by less than a foot. Garrison also tied for first with a top height of 1.78 meters, but did so in fewer attempts to claim first place.
Sophomore Dan Caggiano also broke a school record for the men in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as his time of 11:10.78 earned him second place and also beat his own previous school mark by six seconds.
Two Valiants took part in the 1,500 meters, as sophomore
Ben Smith (Proctor, Vt./Mount St. Joseph Academy) made his first appearance of the year in the event and took fifth place by crossing the line in 4:38.07. Senior
Mike Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) followed just a few seconds later in sixth place, finishing in 4:40.90. Senior
Morrison Boateng (Bronx, N.Y./UAAHC) also had a top-five finish in the 400-meter dash, earning the fifth spot with a time of 53.82.
On the women's side, freshman Alexis Lanzillotti broke the school record in the 800 meters for the second time this year, as she took third place overall by crossing the finish line in 2:31.47.
Senior Sarah Gustavsson also competed in the 1,500 meters for Manhattanville, posting a time of 5:25.91 to earn fifth place out of eight runners.
Manhattanville will next return to the track as a team on Friday, as the Valiants travel to Eastern Connecticut State for the ECSU Invitational beginning at 3:30 p.m.
