PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men's and women's cross country teams hosted the third annual Valiant Cross Country Invitational on a beautiful Saturday morning on campus. The Valiant men's team took third place out of six teams at the event, while the women's squad placed fourth in the seven-team field.
The invitational had its largest field yet in its third year, as over 100 total runners (45 men and 57 women) took part in the 5K race that traversed all of Manhattanville's campus. Roberts Wesleyan took first both in both races: the women's team finished with 20 points after taking six of the top seven spots, while the men's team grabbed five of the first eight to finish with 22 points.
Matthew Hussey of Roberts Wesleyan and Katherine Henri of Purchase took first place individually. Hussey crossed the line in 17:08 to win the men's race by five seconds, and Henri's time of 19:28 was good for an emphatic 38-second margin of victory on the women's side.
The Manhattanville women's team was led by senior
Kelly Davidson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza), who came up a few spots short of top-20 finish with a time of 23:38 that was good enough for 22nd place. Freshman
Shannon Roberts (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) was the next Valiant to finish by coming in 27th by completing the course in 24:51.
Junior
Alexis Moore (Voorheesville, N.Y./Voorheesville) took 33rd place in 26:13 and senior
Nicole Muschio (Pawling, N.Y./Pawling) placed 42nd with a time of 28:40. Freshman
Ayeshah Wiggins (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) finished up the team's top five, taking 45th place with a time of 28:50.
For the Manhattanville men, junior Dan Caggiano earned a top-10 finish on the 5K course with a time of 17:39, which was good enough for ninth position. Classmate Teddy Celaya just missed a top-10 finish of his own, earning 11th place by crossing the line in 17:59.
Fellow junior Ben Smith took 13th place with a time of 18:08, followed by freshman Matt Goidell also earning a spot in the top-20 thanks to a 19:20 finish that placed 17th overall. Junior Amado Amezquita-Santos rounded out the Valiant scorers with a 31st-place result (21:24).
Manhattanville will be back in action next Saturday, as the Valiants travel to Williamstown, Mass., for the Williams College Purple Valley Classic beginning with the men's race at noon.
