WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Barbra Kelly, Assistant to the Director of Athletics at Manhattanville, was named a winner of the 2013 Giant Steps Award, which is presented annually by the Middle Atlantic Conference. Kelly received her award at the MAC's year-end banquet, which was held on May 7 at Lycoming College.
The Giant Steps Award is awarded to an Athletics Department member who has prevailed over great adversity. Kelly was a co-recipient of the award this year along with Wilkes University women's tennis player Melanie Nolt.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and having a successful surgery, Kelly continues to be a positive and involved member of the Manhattanville community. Nominated by the Manhattanville Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Kelly has proven herself to be a true Valiant. Through her work with the annual Breast Cancer Walk, “Pink” themed athletic events and social media groups, Kelly has raised cancer awareness on the College's campus.
“Being involved with the Athletic Department, I have grown to respect and admire the student-athletes for their hard work, discipline and determination,” said Kelly. “To turn around and have them honor me in this way was humbling. I am grateful for the award and for the love and support that they have given me.”
Director of Athletics Keith Levinthal worked with Kelly during her battle with breast cancer and witnessed her drive and commitment. Even during challenging times, she was always there to support the students.
“It is terrific to see Barb recognized by the Conference for overcoming breast cancer,” said Levinthal. “I remember the days she would have to leave for treatment, and it took a lot of courage to make it through the most challenging times. Throughout it all, Barb was at her best and made a great impact on our student-athletes.”
