Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – The Manhattanville men's soccer team took down St. Mary's on Saturday at the Elmer Lord Classic in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 victory thanks to a late goal by freshman
Omar Parra (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport).
St. Mary's struck first on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when sophomore Chris Harwick connected from 30 yards out on a fantastic goal. Luckily for the Valiants, that wouldn't be enough.
Manhattanville battled back and it only took four minutes after the goal from Harwick for the Valiants to answer. Parra started off his big day by feeding freshman
Dan Lorandini (Garden City Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) for his first goal of the season in the 24th minute.
The attack wouldn't stop there.
Three minutes after the Valiants got on the scoreboard, they would do it again. Freshman
Wes Wilson (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) linked up with classmate
Jamie Macchia (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) for an assist after Macchia was able to handle a cross for the header into the back of the net in the 27th minute. The Valiants took a 2-1 lead into halftime.
The Seahawks refused to go down without a fight in the second half. Freshman Zach Fontenot scored the equalizer for St. Mary's in the 57th minute off a deflection inside the 18-yard box, notching the game up at two goals apiece.
The game would go back and forth but the Valiants proved to be the stronger team in pursuit of the victory. After a foul in the box during the 88th minute from the Seahawks, it was Parra who came on to attempt a penalty kick for the Valiants. Parra would get the job done by connecting on the penalty shot and it would eventually be enough for Manhattanville to claim their first victory of the season.
The Valiants attempted more shot attempts than the Seahawks with a margin of 19-15. Manhattanville dominated the first half by taking seven more shots than St. Mary's. Sophomore
Steve Singson (Deer Park, N.Y./St. Anthony's) came up with seven saves in goal for the Valiants.
The team will make their way back to Purchase, N.Y.to get ready for their next game against Lehman at Govaliants.com Field at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
