Shaughnessy's 30 Saves Lead Valiants to a 2-0 Win Over Undefeated Beacons

RYE, N.Y. - Senior goaltender Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) posted a 30-save shutout to help the Manhattanville women's hockey team remain undefeated in ECAC East Conference play with a 2-0 victory over previously undefeated UMass Boston on Saturday at Playland Ice Casino. After being eliminated from last year's postseason by the Beacons, and with UMass Boston sitting alongside Manhattanville at the top of the conference, the Valiants had plenty of motivation heading into the game.

Manhattanville continues to dominate at home. In the previous two games at Playland Ice Casino this season, the Valiants scored within the first four minutes, and today was no different. Just over two minutes in, senior co-captain Rachael Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Sound Shore Warriors (MAWHL)) collected the puck right off the faceoff, pushed her way through the neutral zone and fired a shot from the top of the left-wing circle that beat goaltender Moe Bradley for an early Manhattanville 1-0 lead.

Both teams traded opportunities throughout the period but it wasn't until just under eight minutes remaining in the period when freshman Sarah Sinning (Southold, NY/National Sports Academy) scored the first goal of her collegiate career, releasing a quick wristshot after receiving a great backhand pass from junior Kyra Herbert (Plainfield, N.H./Lebanon). Sinning's shot beat Bradley low to the blocker side, giving the Valiants a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

It was a goaltending battle from there Bradley and Shaughnessy kept the score at 2-0 for the remainder of the game. Shaughnessy, who has been impressive this season, has now recorded two shutouts in the last three games and has posted a .984 save percentage over that span.

WIth the win, Manhattanville (3-2-0, 3-0-0 ECAC East) is one of the last two teams unbeaten in conference play this season, along with nationally ranked Norwich. The conference competition will ramp up next weekend when Castleton State and Norwich visit Playland Ice Casino on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
