Manhattanville Athletics Announces 2015 Hall of Fame Class

PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville Department of Athletics is excited to announce the newest class of the Manhattanville Athletics Hall of Fame, with two former student-athletes, one coach and one staff member making up the second quartet of inductees as part of the Class of 2015.

The second induction class includes former men's basketball coach Tim Cohane, women's basketball and field hockey star Brenda (Kearns) Mayo '82, College grounds supervisor Dante Pacicca and three-sport standout Cathy (Klaschka) Ryen '88.

"After the great success of our inaugural class last year, this class again recognizes some of the most influential student-athletes and staff who made tremendous impacts on our Athletic Department both on and off the fields of play," Director of Athletics Keith Levinthal said. "We look forward to keeping this tradition going strong as we welcome them into our Hall of Fame in September."

In addition to the induction ceremony, which will take place on Saturday, September 12 in Reid Castle, honorees will also be recognized with plaques on a display along the walkway outside Kennedy Gymnasium.

The four members of the Manhattanville Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2015 are:

7318Tim Cohane

As head coach of the men's basketball team from 1974-79, Tim Cohane was the architect of the basketball program at Manhattanville and led the Valiants to some of the best seasons in program history. After posting his first winning season with a 17-9 record in 1976-77, Cohane lifted the team to greater heights in 1977-78, posting a 17-11 mark and earning the college's first trip to the NCAA Tournament in any sport with an at-large berth in the Eastern Regional. The team returned to the NCAA Tournament the following year with another 17-11 mark, giving the program two of its three all-time NCAA Tournament appearances.

In five seasons at Manhattanville, Cohane led the team to a 69-59 record, placing him fourth in program history in career victories and second in both career winning percentage (.539) and wins per season (13.8). He coached three players who went on to score 1,000 career points as a Valiant as well as 2014 Manhattanville Hall of Fame inductee Roger Dunphy '80.

Following his time at Manhattanville, Cohane moved to the Division I level where he served as the head coach of Dartmouth College for four years from 1979-83. He has also served as a coach at multiple successful stops, including the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Boston College and the University of Buffalo.

The Cohane family also had a major impact on the Manhattanville Athletic Department through his father, Tim Cohane, Sr., who recalled the 16th century quote "A coeur vaillant, rien d'impossible" ("To the valiant of heart, nothing is impossible) that produced the unique nickname that Manhattanville still holds today.

7320Brenda (Kearns) Mayo '82

As the Manhattanville women's basketball team was establishing itself as a national power, Brenda (Kearns) Mayo was the point guard leading the team to new heights. A rare mix of scorer and distributor, Kearns still stands as Manhattanville's all-time leader in assists (593) and free throws made (512) and also ranks fourth in program history with 1,266 points. Helping to set up classmate and fellow Hall of Famer Theresa Carey '82, she boasts the top single-season assist total in school history (178 in 1981-82) and four of the top-seven all-time at the school.

As a member of the most successful class in women's basketball history, Kearns guided led the Valiants to three New York State championships, multiple years with national rankings and an 84-42 record over four seasons that includes the only three 20-win seasons in program history. In her senior season, the Valiants won a program-record 23 games, made the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance and spent all season with a national ranking, reaching as high as third nationally in the NCAA.

Kearns was also a four-year letterwinner on the field hockey team for Manhattanville, helping that team reach new heights as well. After reaching the semifinals of the New York State AIAW Div. III Championships as a junior, the Valiants were nationally ranked early in Kearns' senior year, in which she co-captained the squad and led it in all major categories with eight goals and eight assists for 24 points. She scored at least 14 goals and 14 assists for 42 points during her time with the team playing primarily as a halfback.

7319Dante Pacicca

Arguably one of the most popular and well-known figures around Manhattanville College for the last four decades, Dante Pacicca has maintained a presence on campus as one of the Athletic Department's most important figures during his time as a member of the College's Physical Plant.

A staple at home athletics events, Pacicca has been an invaluable member of the Manhattanville family whose exceptional grounds work continually made it possible for Valiant teams to play when no other programs in the area were able to do so. Pacicca has been a contributor to athletics literally from the ground up, having built the fields for the college's first outdoor athletics programs in the mid-1970s, and since then has been charged with maintaining the soccer, field hockey, baseball and softball surfaces at Manhattanville.

One of the college's longest-tenured employees and a living historian of Manhattanville student-athletes and coaches, Pacicca has been honored four times (1986, 1999, 2009, 2014) with the Valiant Plaque, which is given to an administrator/staff member or friend who has demonstrated outstanding service to the Athletic Department. His contributions have helped to continually give the Valiants a distinct home-field advantage.

7321Cathy (Klaschka) Ryen '88

Cathy (Klaschka) Ryen was one of the first three-sport stars at Manhattanville in the mid-1980s, leaving her mark as a four-year letterwinner on the soccer field, the basketball court and softball field between 1983-87.

Fitting her versatility, Klaschka was a dual threat on the softball field for the Valiants, posting a .399 career batting average and a 1.65 career earned run average – including two seasons with a batting average above .400 and an ERA under 1.50. In the circle, she is the school's all-time leader in ERA and also ranks seventh in wins (23) and eighth in strikeouts (144), shutouts and complete games; at the plate, she is third in triples (nine), fifth in stolen bases (23), six in slugging percentage (.624) and eighth in batting average.

Klaschka was also a force for the up-and-coming women's soccer team, finishing her career as one of the top scorers in program history. She ranks fifth on the school single-season ledgers with a career-high 19 goals and 41 points as a junior, helping her to a stellar career in which she scored 46 goals with 11 assists for 103 points, making her one of four players in program history to reach the century mark for a career. She currently ranks top-10 in program history in goals (third), assists (10th) and points (fourth), while also sitting second all-time with her 11 match-winning goals.

Klaschka was also a key contributor on the court for the Valiant women's basketball team, scoring 729 points in 87 career games. She graduated eighth in program history in scoring and still ranks 26th on the school's all-time scoring list, while also remaining fourth in career field-goal percentage (.473).

In addition to her excellence on the fields of play, Klaschka also excelled in the classroom, earning Manhattanville's Co-Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors in 1985-86.
