WEST LAWN, Pa. – The Manhattanville baseball team saw its season come to an end Sunday afternoon at Owls Field as the Valiants fell to Misericordia University in the final game of the loser's bracket 14-10.
Junior
Robbie Lynch (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) recorded three hits on the day for the Valiants (25-16 overall), including an RBI single in the eighth inning to become the all-time leader in RBI's at Manahttanville, passing A.J. Triano '10.
Sophomore
Danny Gallagher (Nanuet, N.Y./Paramus Catholic) had a strong day at the plate for Manahttanville, reaching base five times on four singles and a hit by pitch to go along with two runs scored and a run batted in. Senior
Jordanis Nunez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) blasted a two-run homerun in his final game wearing the black and maroon and freshman
Luke Scoggins (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) hit his first career homer in the loss.
The Valiants used eight different pitchers on the mound, with junior
Joe Anselmi (North Rockland, N.Y./North Rockland) making the start in his third appearance of the season on the hill. The junior tossed 2.1 innings for Manahttanville, allowing three runs. Sophomore
Thomas Contrelli (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) was charged with the loss for the Valiants.
After both teams went scoreless in their first two trips to the plate, Nunez broke the scoreless draw with second homerun of the season to give Manhattanville a 2-0 lead in the third. The lead was short lived for the Valiants however, as Misericordia (32-11 overall) plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Valiants used RBI singles from junior
Anthony Iannuzzi (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) and Gallagher to retake the lead in the top of the fourth 4-2, but once again it was the Cougars responding immediately in the bottom half of the stanza. An RBI single from Kenny Jarema tied the game at four runs apiece in the fourth, and took a four run lead on homeruns by Mike Comerford and Miles Westrich.
The Cougars took a commanding 11-4 lead after plating three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Despite trailing by seven runs, the Valiant bats did not go to sleep. The Valiants got one run back on an RBI groundout from Anselmi before Scoggins' first career homerun made it 11-7 after seven innings of play. The rally continued in the eighth for Manhattanville, as Gallagher recorded his fourth hit of the day to plate senior
Jake McGrath (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane). With the bases loaded Lynch hit a hard ground ball in the hole at shortstop to bring home junior
Chris Conklin (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and set the program RBI mark. Anselmi made it a one run game with a sacrifice fly but the rally was ended when Scoggins hit a frozen rope line drive right to Misericordia second baseman Kyle Lindsay.
The Cougars added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to lead 14-10, and the Valiant magic ran out in the bottom half of the inning as the Valiants went down in order as Misericordia held on to win 14-10 and move onto the championship round against DeSales University.
