Women's XC Places 7th, Men 8th at Trinity

Freshman Kelly Davidson led all Valiant runners with an 18th-place finish at Trinity on Saturday.

MANCHESTER, Conn. – The Manhattanville men’s and women’s cross country teams took part in their second race of the 2009 season on Saturday, as the Valiant women placed seventh and the men’s team took eighth place at the Trinity College Cross Country Invitational, held on Saturday at Wickham Park.

The men ran a 5K course and the women traveled a 4K course in Saturday’s meet, which featured teams from the Division I, II and III levels. Stonehill College took first place in the nine-team men’s meet, while the College of New Jersey took top honors among seven teams on the women’s side.

Freshman Kelly Davidson (Yorba Linda, Calif.) was the top finisher on either side for Manhattanville, as the freshman placed 18th overall by navigating the 4K course in 17:35. The time was the fifth-highest by a freshman at the meet.

Sophomore Patricia Neubauer (Potsdam, Germany) was the next finisher for the Valiant women, finishing up in 48th place with a time of 18:18, followed by classmate Genevieve Klick (Burdett, N.Y.) in 82nd place with a time of 20 minutes even.

A trio of Valiants crossed the tape just after Klick, as freshman Olivia Maldonado (Port Washington, N.Y.) placed 87th with a time of 20:44 followed right behind by sophomore Pilar Mahady (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) with a time of 20:46 and freshman Kayleigh Brooks (North Haven, Conn.) with a time of 20:49.

Junior Corey Clavet (Shenendehowa, N.Y.) was the top Valiant finisher on the men’s side for the second consecutive race, placing 45th against a very tough field with a time of 17:38. Sophomore Mike Szarkowicz (Watertown, Conn.) also ran a good race for the Manhattanville men, finishing in 18:02 to place 65th overall.

Following Szarkowicz, sophomore Josh Marrero (Elmsford, N.Y.) placed 78th (19:03), freshman Chad Spaeth (Carmel, N.Y.) took 80th (19:07) and freshman Kiprop Kibet (Eldoret, Kenya) earned 82nd place (19:12) to help the Valiants finish in eighth place overall.

Manhattanville will take the coming week off from competition before returning to competition on September 26 at the Codfish Bowl in Boston, Mass.
